Take a short ferry to the Isle of Bute from Wemyss Bay outside Glasgow, and from where you dock it’s a short bus ride to the glorious Georgian/Victorian pile, built for the 3rd Marquess of Bute, who converted to Catholicism at the age of 21.

COMPTON VERNEY is an art gallery set in a handsome Georgian manor house amid glorious parkland: it’s a fabulous place to visit in springtime. And across the UK there are other rural art galleries offering indoor art and outdoor walks in nature. Here are some Tablet favourites.

Waddesdon Manor, Oxfordshire

Built by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, the French inspired chateau contains more than 15,000 works of art including paintings by Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough, as well as con temporary pieces such as Porca Miseria (2003), a stunning chandelier made of broken porcelain and cutlery, created by Ingo Maurer.
