Ahead of St Patrick’s Day, the leader of the Irish Church recalled how Patrick was taken into slavery as a young boy and bought to Ireland: “In that time of hardship his faith deepened, and through prayer he came to know God’s presence in new and powerful ways.”
When he eventually returned to his homeland, Patrick felt called to return to Ireland, not as a slave but as a missionary, bringing the hope and light of the Gospel to a people and culture he had once feared, Archbishop Martin said.
“In many ways, we too are called to rediscover that same missionary courage. We face a rapidly changing society and a culture where faith can no longer be taken for granted.”
He said St Patrick’s witness reminds us that the Gospel can still take root in every age and culture when it is lived with authenticity, humility and hope.
Archbishop Martin made his comments in an Introductory Message for the Armagh Diocesan Congress (20-22 March) which is focused on youth, family and faith.
The future of the Church, he stressed, would depend greatly on how the Church nurtures and accompanies young people, how it supports family life, and “how readily our parishes can become communities where faith cannot just grow but flourish”.
He said he hoped that the Congress would shape a vision for the Church that will guide it in the years leading towards the Patrician Year of 2032 and beyond.
Separately, Ukrainian priest Fr Vasyl Kornitsky, who ministers in the Archdiocese of Dublin, has said he draws inspiration from St Patrick who “had a very difficult life and experienced fear and exile, hardships, but he was such a humble man, he never lost hope”.
Praying for the miracle of peace for Ukraine, he recalled how growing up, he never thought the Soviet Union would collapse, but it did in three days: “So this war can be stopped also, I truly believe, we just need to pray for a miracle,” he said.
