They may admire competence, intelligence and managerial skill, but they also want warmth and emotional connection. For all his genuine strengths, Keir Starmer never got it. Labour has paid the price, struggling to reconnect emotionally with large parts of the country that once regarded the party as its natural political home. Increasingly, many Labour MPs believe Burnham may be the figure best placed to rebuild that relationship.
