Champagne sales are “a brilliant barometer of collective consumer sentiment”, according to Patrick Schmitt, writing in the trade journal The Drinks Business. If it is true that Champagne sales track the collective mood, the fact that sales dropped during the pandemic by only 18 per cent is a positive indication, among wine bibbers, at least, that morale is weathering the storm.
