Pope Francis’ bold initiative in calling for a profound review of the way the Catholic Church operates must be judged a considerable success so far. He has presided over an international synod the like of which the Church has never seen, in which cardinals and bishops mingled with clergy and lay people from every corner of the universal Church. And not just mingling, but, over four weeks of intense conversations, striving to understand each other by respectful speaking and thoughtful and prayerful listening. It was an extraordinary opening to the Holy Spirit to discern the direction the People of God must take if they are to be obedient to the will of the Lord.
