The plans announced in the report include the adoption of a non-statutory definition of anti-Muslim hostility and the appointment of a special representative who will help facilitate understanding of the definition.

The rise of hostility to Muslims, rooted in the prejudicial stereotyping of them and their beliefs, must be addressed – not least because it risks deepening the divisions that fuel extremism and conflict. The government’s efforts to do so while safeguarding freedom of speech should be welcomed, together with its crucial ongoing protections against antisemitism, which is also on the rise.
