The letter to the Ephesians has been just a bit of a Cinderella in conventional Pauline studies, especially in the Protestant world, and Tom Wright begins this engaging and accessible book by saying bluntly that a large part of the problem has been squaring its theology with the dominant paradigm of “authentic” Pauline thinking as represented by Romans and Galatians, as read in the post Luther period. Indeed, he goes so far as to say that the widespread consensus that it is not actually written by Paul has something to do with this ideological discomfort.
