Jeremy Hunt is a Tigger. He exudes energy, optimism and well-meaning – despite being Chancellor of the Exchequer when the last Conservative government came crashing down a year ago. Now, while the rest of us Eeyores are bemoaning the woeful state of Britain, he exhorts us to believe in our potential, recognise our strengths, raise our eyes to those sunlit uplands.
He is not dismayed by “black swan” events, past or possible. He derides those he calls “declinists”. He is mildly apologetic about his party’s recent term in office (“didn’t get everything right”), but downhearted? Not Sir Jeremy! He thinks we should recognise the iron link between economic strength and political influence, and not underestimate the clout of the United Kingdom. This book – the first of a pair; the second is to focus on overcoming our economic challenges – is his explanation of how it can be done.
