“It was the closest election for President of the United States in the twenty-first century. Period.” This is what Kamala Harris told a crowd at Howard University, from which she graduated in 1986, in a video shared widely online in September. It might be true, but the election of 5 November 2024 was one that the then US Vice President lost decisively. Under Donald Trump, the Republicans won back the Senate, claimed a swathe of so-called blue wall seats in the Midwest and secured the popular vote for the first time in two decades.
