MANY CURRENT stage shows – from The Devil Wears Prada to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – have movie roots. But two new plays have a more complex relationship with cinema: one overshadowed by a forthcoming film project, the other increasing expectation for a future release. The loser to the movies is Please Please Me, Tom Wright’s biographical drama about Brian Epstein, manager of the Beatles, and especially his connection with John Lennon. Sam Mendes is currently making, scheduled for 2028 release, a quartet of films telling the Beatles story from the viewpoints of Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
