The theologian Vincent Twomey – never slow to stick his oar in – has argued that the Catholic Church in Ireland never recovered from the change of language from Irish to English.
It was taken in the late 1960s, but even in sepia you can’t help noticing not only her ease and confidence but the implausibility of the backdrop: a spiky off-white Gothic mansion apparently parachuted into the unforgiving mountainy landscape of the west of Ireland.
