CDF to be given power to judge bishops in abuse cases

Following a proposal from the C9 Council of Cardinals, Pope Francis has approved a new system of accountability for bishops with respect to allegations of the sexual abuse of minors. The system will give authority to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) to judge bishops “with regard to crimes of the abuse of office when connected to the abuse of minors”. A new office will be set up at the CDF that will work as a tribunal to judge bishops facing allegations connected to such cases.The system was proposed by Boston’s Cardinal Sean O’Malley who as well as being a member of the C9 body that advises the Pope is head of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
