European defence chiefs, including Britain’s, seem aware that the entire burden of supporting Ukraine militarily may soon fall into Europe’s lap, which is why they have been talking up the grim prospect of a wider European war. So making sure Trump blames Putin and not Zelenskyy for the likely failure of the current peace talks will have profound consequences. These are terrible dilemmas. To point out that Europe has been here before is little consolation.
