Few Catholic teachings provoke as much misunderstanding as Purgatory. Often associated with images of punishment and fear, the doctrine is rooted in a deeper question: how are we to understand the transformation of imperfect human beings in the presence of a perfectly holy and merciful God?
In this Tablet webinar, we examine the biblical foundations and historical development of the Church’s teaching on Purgatory, asking what Catholic doctrine actually says and how it has been understood through the centuries. Is Purgatory a place, a process or a mystery we can only approach through the language of faith? Why does the Church pray for the dead? And how might this teaching illuminate the relationship between judgment, mercy and the hope of eternal life? An opportunity to revisit a neglected doctrine and consider its significance for Catholic faith today.
