Germany’s largest carnival parade in Hamburg was cancelled a few hours before it was due to begin on Sunday, because of terrorist attacks in Copenhagen the day before, writes Christa Pongratz-Lippitt.
In the Danish capital a lone gunman attacked a cafe holding a conference on free speech, and a Jewish synagogue, and murdered one person at each location.
Bishop Hans-Jochen Jaschke, an auxiliary in Hamburg, warned that democracies must not allow themselves to be pressurised by Islamist terrorists.
