Kieran Conry’s resignation as Bishop of Arundel and Brighton comes at a time when the diocese is preparing for a major celebration. In July 2015 it is marking its golden jubilee – Festival 50 – with a Mass at the Amex Stadium, the home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, with 10,000 people expected to attend. Archbishop Peter Smith, the apostolic administrator, is due to celebrate the Mass. Over the last two years, the diocese has been preparing for the jubilee by encouraging study of three constitutions of the Second Vatican Council through DVDs and booklets. A week after his resignation, Bishop Conry, who stepped down after admitting he had been unfaithful to his vow of celibacy, had been due to send a pastoral letter encouraging involvement in the jubilee.
