One hundred and fifty years ago today, the first post-Reformation Mass in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, was celebrated. It was said in a small room of a building on the town’s high street by Fr Andre Walshe, then chaplain to Charles Scott Murray, who served the Mass.The owner of Danesfield House, a large stately home near the town, Scott Murray was received into the Church at the time of John Henry Newman and the Oxford Movement.He built a chapel at Danesfield with stained-glass windows designed by the champion of the Gothic Revival, A.W.N. Pugin. When Scott Murray’s son sold the house, he stored the windows until a church could be found for them. Now they can be seen at the Sacred Heart in Henley, where the Archbishop of Birmingham, Bernard Longley, will celebrate Mass today
