From Stonor to St Mark’s


 
Lord McAlpine of West Green, who died this week, survived more than one brush with death during his life. The former Conservative Party treasurer underwent two triple heart bypass operations more than 10 years ago – and the second changed his life. After emerging from a deliberately induced coma following the second operation, McAlpine decided to become a Catholic. He became a regular Massgoer on Saturday evenings at St Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, just round the corner from his palazzo there. This was not, however, McAlpine’s first encounter with the Catholic faith.The McAlpine family home at Fawley, Buckinghamshire, was just a few miles south of Stonor Park, the home of the recusant Stonor family.
