Dublin Catholic college withdraws Jackie Kennedy letters from auction
Private letters from Jacqueline Kennedy to an Irish priest have been withdrawn from auction following what is understood to have been an intervention by her family.
All Hallows College in Dublin has pulled the sale of 31 letters from Mrs Kennedy, wife of US President John F Kennedy, to one of its priests, Fr Joseph Leonard, after members of her family were understood to have intervened just weeks before the auction was due to take place.
The letters revealed Jackie Kennedy’s feelings about her husband and her grief following his assassination.
In a statement the college said: “Representatives of All Hallows College and the Vincentians Fathers are now exploring with members of Mrs Kennedy’s family how best to preserve and curate this archive for the future.”
Mrs Kennedy corresponded with Fr Leonard, a Vincentian, for 14 years after meeting him on a trip to Ireland in 1950. The sale of the letters was expected to raise up to €1.2 million.
