A Catholic Deacon who ran a half-way house for men with a history of crime and drug addiction on Long Island, east of New York, has been stabbed to death by one of its residents.

Police found Deacon Patrick Logsdon, 70, unresponsive in a pool of blood, with multiple stab wounds late on 3 November. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials, who said it was unclear what had sparked the violent attack.

Nassau police said they were seeking a suspect, Andre Patton, 47, a resident of Anthony House home in Roosevelt. Mr Patton was described as armed and dangerous.

Logsdon had worked as a manager of Antony House for over 30 years. The home took in up to nine men at a time, many of whom had spent decades in prison, giving them a bed, home-cooked meals and helping them to find employment.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul, of the Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre, which includes Long Island, runs Anthony House.

In a statement on 4 November about Mr Logsdon, the diocese said:

“Even at the time of his death, he was carrying out the Gospel message of caring for the poor as he has done faithfully for 33 years. Let us seek healing and comfort in the one true God during this time of great loss.”
