CofE appoints second woman to episcopacy

The Church of England has today appointed a second woman bishop.

Canon Alison White’s appointment as suffragan Bishop of Hull follows the consecration of Bishop Libby Lane as Bishop of Stockport, a suffragan see in Chester, in January.

Canon Alison is married to Bishop Frank White, Assistant Bishop of Newcastle, making them the first married couple to be named bishops in the Church of England’s history.

The Archbishop of York, Dr Sentamu, who appointed Canon Alison, said she was a person “of real godliness and wisdom.”

“This is a joyous day!” He added.

Canon Alison, 58, who will be consecrated at York Minster on 3 July, said the diocese was one of great faith and hope.

“I can’t wait to be part of loving God and growing the Church in this great part of Yorkshire,” she said.

Legislation to permit women bishops was passed by the General Synod of the Church of England last November after years of debate.
