US bishops condemn brutal CIA torture revelations

A spokesman for the US Bishops has condemned acts of torture committed by the CIA and revealed in a Senate Intelligence Committee report.

Bishop Oscar Cantu of Las Cruces, New Mexico, said that the acts of torture, which included waterboarding and sleep deprivation, “were unequivocally wrong”.

The chairman of the US bishops’ committee on International Justice and Peace added that they “violated the God-given human dignity inherent in all people”.

The Executive Summary of the Senate’s report into the torture of detainees after 9/11 detailed the brutal treatment of detainees and said that information derived from them was often “fabricated”.

The full 6,000-page report by the Select Committee, believed to be highly critical of the US’ actions, is classified.

The bishops’ conference has consistently condemned the use of torture and in April welcomed the news of the publication of parts of the Senate report.

Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, the then chairman of the International Justice and Peace committee, said it was time for the US to take “a clear stance against torture”.
