Scores of Christians murdered in attack on Nigerian town

Scores of Christians have been killed in a town in north-east Nigeria in a suspected attack by Boko Haram militants.

The total number of dead is unknown because the attackers cut off almost all communication to the town, Shani, a predominantly Christian town in Borno State.

More than 30 men rode into the town on motorbikes on Saturday night, threw bombs into houses then shot people as they tried to flee, Reuters reported.

"A boy ran into my shop and said his father and elder brother had been shot. He was only wearing shorts, no top and sweating despite the wintry weather. I shut down my shop immediately, leaving some items outside," a shopkeeper in Shani, Shuabu Lawal, told the news agency.

Last month the Nigerian Archbishop of Jos, Ignatius Kaigama, urged Christians to pray for Nigeria. He warned that the 2015 general election would be “explosive”.
