Stick to principles


 
I note that one of the “could do better” items in the Ofsted report on St Joseph’s College,  at Swindon (Tablet education supplement, 26 October) was “failure to implement rigorously performance-related pay” (PRP). Well, all I can say to the principal is “good for you!” Of all the most egregious, time-wasting, soul-destroying and team- dissembling activities Ofsted has in its Pandora’s box, this is the most stupid and unnecessary. When you are trying to rebuild a school, you need everyone to encourage each other and not worry about where in the reward system they will come – and even worse, have to be the poor manager who has to rank their people and then to try to justify it.
