Stop complaining about Heythrop and help the Jesuits

by Fr Mark Minihane

Every week I read about the closure of Heythrop College in magazines and papers. It is regrettable but not surprising given what it needs to run it. The Jesuits over the years have given their best both in funding and in providing Jesuits to help run it.

Now they are being attacked on all sides despite the fact that they are reduced in number by 1,000 in the 1960s to 172 today, and I expect that like my own Order in the UK the majority are elderly and unwell.

Why don't those who wish the college to continue do something positive, like raising the needed money or join the Jesuits? Get together and organise yourselves.

How many of those who sign the petition have had sons, brothers or uncles become a Jesuit in the last three generations? It is easy for the academics to write and express their dismay. The academics and others who are complaining must between them know wealthy people and institutions where financial help can be obtained.

Simply making a protest or just signing a petition means nothing: it does not give any practical help. Words alone are not enough, that should be obvious.

In my life as a priest, now 77-years-old, I have met people who wanted this or that to be done, but gave no practical help. I have also met people who got involved and brought their ideas to fuition. They were prepared not just to talk or sign a petition but went beyond words.

Simply demanding seems to me like an insult to the Jesuits after all they have done. Thank them for all they have given.

I have great respect for the Jesuits they have given so much to the Church and society. Stop targeting them. Understand their situation, get involved and thank them for all they have given.
