Dear Editor,
Prelates and others currently taking sides and adopting fixed stances on the issues facing the Synod should pause and, together, turn to Jesus Christ.
In Him alone will solutions be found.
Jesus incarnated unconditional love for all people, regardless of gender, ethnicity, age or life orientation. He was open to all. He renewed lives by His healing.
He forgave sinners freely without imposing conditions or sanctions on them. He called all to love as He loves and to live that love by serving others. That should be the animating spirit of the Synod.
The Church - Christ's chosen way of continuing to live and minister in the world - should always pattern her behaviour on His, not least at the present time .His teaching was clear.
The Church should proclaim it firmly but lovingly. There is no need to change it.
To those whose lives are at variance with that teaching ( and who of us can claim to live totally in harmony with it?) the Church must continue to echo Jesus' call to follow Him, to be nourished by His Body and Blood and to proclaim His Kingdom
If the Synodal Fathers keep Jesus firmly in mind they will hear in their deliberations His Spirit speaking to them to the great enrichment of the Church and the world.
