Pray for the climate change conference

by Mark Hatcher

From 30 November to 11 December the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will be taking place in Paris, France.

There are grave concerns that the measures so far approved internationally fall well short of what is required to confine the rise in global temperature to 2°C that is essential for the long term well being of the planet.

Climate change is already having a devastating effect on poor communities across the world. If nothing more is done the scale of suffering will increase. A new international commitment on the climate is urgently needed and for this the outcome of the Paris conference is crucial.

In a spirit of solidarity with the communities already affected by climate change, may I suggest that during the bidding prayers at Parish masses across Britain in each weekend in November we could all pray for the success of the conference by reciting the "Prayer For Our Earth" written by Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si.
