There must be many of us surprised to discover that Pope Francis is, after all, just as human as the rest of us. His inspiration and courage is like a beacon of hope, but his remarks on marriage ["Pope Francis 'truly sorry' for telling Catholics not to 'breed like rabbits'", The Tablet, 4 February] on returning from the Philippines could only cause distress.
The plain truth is that supporting the clear veto of Humanae Vitae on the use of contraceptives will burden the consciences of ordinary people, often unlettered, unable to judge, but made to feel guilty. It is particularly sad when the veto has been shown to be wrong, and when Pope Francis himself dispenses with rules when he considers that necessary. He knows that people and their relationship with God matters so much more than man-made rules.
