Eucharist and mission – which comes first?

Regarding Archbishop Longley's article on the Churches' futile search to give the world the Eucharist, which is God's gift, (The Tablet, 24 January), we have the unity question back to front.

In 1990 Priests and People puplished an article thus: "The Eucharist as Sacrament of the Mission of the Church". It began: "This paper examines the reasons for regarding the Eucharist as the Sacrament of the Mission of the Church, to nourish believers who are strengthened for mission, and to offer Christ to the hungry and the sinful. This has always been preached in the words of Scripture and liturgies such as the liturgy of the Catholic Mass, even when teaching and practice have been different."

Lord, I am not worthy, but only say the word and I shall be healed.
