The Algerian martyrs

Referring to Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald’s letter of 24 January listing the Religious who lost their lives in Algeria in the 1990’s, I would like to clarify the Congregations to which the Sisters belonged.

With the Marist Brother Henri Vergès, a Little Sister of the Assumption was murdered on the Sunday of the closure of the first Synod for Africa (May 1994). In the years that followed two Augustinian Sisters, two Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles and a Little Sister of the Sacred Heart lost their lives in Algeria. “The martyrdom is the greatest testimony of love. It is not a matter of running towards death, nor seeking suffering for suffering’s sake... but it is in shedding your own blood that come close to God.” (Bishop Pierre Claverie).
