Creeping return of Latin

Latin seems to be creeping back into the liturgy. As a member of the Vernacular Society of Great Britain I gave thanks when, in the 1960s, Mass was to be celebrated in the language of the country. Even the occasional Latin Mass would not intrude, but would placate those who wanted to retain nostalgic memories.

However, many churches seem to be inserting Latin into the Liturgy. For example, Latin for the Kyrie, Sanctus and Agnus Dei (sic!) is in some places commanded for parts of the year. The impression follows that Latin is a more serious language than English and so is appropriate during serious times such as Advent and Lent. I noted that Arundel Cathedral's Midnight Mass had the Creed sung in Latin - I can't believe many of the congregation could remember it!

I should add that I am no enemy of Latin, having studied it for 11 years and even (in theory) listened to daily lectures in Latin for three years.
