The French Catholic Church has severely criticised a decision to allow French overseas departments to replace some national holidays based on the Christian calendar with feast days of different majority faiths there.
A socialist deputy from the Indian Ocean island of Réunion proposed the change to allow for a Muslim and a Hindu holiday. It was added as an amendment to an economic reform bill. Easter Monday and Whit Monday holidays are likely to be scrapped.
