A help for teachers in need

by Martin O’Brie

Many students in Catholic schools never attend Mass and the only time they hear the Gospel is at school, particularly during assembly. This places a special responsibility on those leading daily worship

With fewer and fewer children attending Mass on a Sunday, the role of schools in preaching the Gospel has increased in importance. However, schools cannot replace church as the principal place of collective worship for children and young people. Faith development is a gradual, lifelong community process in a partnership of home, school and parish. Parents are the first and best teachers of a child’s faith. The family is the cradle of life and love, the place in which the individual is born and grows and the role of schools and parishes is to help parents be more conscious of their role and to work with them.

I recently began to research the development of Ten:Ten Resources for a new website that aims to provide high-quality, media-rich resources for Catholic primary and secondary schools throughout the UK. The name Ten:Ten is derived from the scripture passage John 10:10, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly” and, through all of our work, Ten:Ten aims to enable participants to live life to the full.
