Close encounters with the promised land

by Grania Egan

Not everyone has the time, resources or capacity to make a pilgrimage to the holy sites of Christianity. But collaborating to create a virtual pilgrimage brings together a host of talents in the service of evangelisation

without having to buy an airline ticket, imagine being able to view the holy sites where Jesus carried out his mission, from within your parish. This intriguing idea has become a reality in Fleet, Hampshire.

Two years ago, our parish began preparations to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of its opening. Instead of doing the usual open- church-and-welcome type event, someone suggested sharing the experience of a recent parish pilgrimage to the Holy Land with other parishioners, who had been unable to attend.

A team of people, including some of the recent pilgrims, explored how they could bring to life, in art form, scenes from the Holy Land including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the Sea of Galilee, the Garden of Gethsemane and many other locations.

Over these two weeks, the Church of Our Lady in Fleet will undergo a massive transformation. Tableaux will be constructed using trees, floristry, artefacts and scenery to invite people into the Holy Land. No talent in the parish has been left untapped.
