Diplomatic free speech?


 
Papal ambassadors are schooled in a classical form of diplomacy that includes discretion, tact and often working behind the scenes. But the world of social media might be changing that. Archbishop Thomas Gullickson, nuncio to the Ukraine, is a regular tweeter and includes links to articles critical of Pope Francis. One of the tweets said: “Francis flogs the Curia. But what a gap between words and deeds”, and links to an article with that headline. Another tweet does the same with an article entitled “The Pope Got it Completely and Utterly Wrong”, which focuses on the Pope’s remarks about Catholics not needing to breed “like rabbits”.
