Immigrants pack pews at Mass in Australia

More than 40 per cent of Australian Catholics attending Mass were born outside the country, with women making up more than six out of every 10 worshippers, a national survey has found.

The National Church Life Survey (NCLS), taken last year in all Australian dioceses, found that 43 per cent of people attending Mass in Australia were born outside Australia. Thirty-seven per cent of those born overseas were from non-English-speaking countries, much higher than the 22 per cent of the overall Australian population.

Dr Ruth Powell, the NCLS Research Director, said Australia had a very high proportion of multicultural parishes compared to other countries. She said the survey found that 62 per cent of Catholics attending Mass were female.
