Don’t try to bargain with Satan, warns Pope

Pope Francis has warned Christians against using “worldly logic” in facing temptation to sin, saying the only true response is to cling to the word of God.

“[Jesus] does not dialogue with Satan, as Eve did in the earthly paradise,” the Pope said at his noonday Angelus on Sunday yesterday.

“Jesus knows well that you cannot dialogue with Satan because he’s so astute. For this reason Jesus, instead of dialoguing with him like Eve did, chooses to take refuge in the Word of God and responds with the power of the Word,” the Pope said, reflecting on the Gospel passage about the devil’s temptation of Jesus in the desert.

“The time of Lent is the opportune time for all of us to carry out a journey of conversion, sincerely confronting ourselves with this page of the Gospel,” he said. He added that Lent was a time for Christians to “renew the promises of our baptism – we renounce Satan and all his works and all his pomps, because he is a seducer.”
