Parishioners battle to save church

A row over the future of a Welsh church looks set to be reignited next week when planners meet to consider a scheme to develop houses on a site belonging to the local diocese, writes Joanna Moorhead.

St Winefride’s in Aberystwyth, was closed three years ago after Menevia diocese said it was beyond repair.  Mike Maloney of Save Our St Winefride’s said this week that Ceredigion County Council would consider plans to build 70 new homes on a separate church-owned site called Penparcau. The sale of this site, he said, could and should be used to fund repairs to the 140-year-old St Winefride’s, which independent reports have said could be repaired and restored for community use.
