Turkson links struggle against global warming and poverty


THE VATICAN’S top spokesman on social justice told a UN conference in New York that the world needs to find new ways of understanding economic growth if it is to reverse global warming and overcome poverty.

Cardinal Peter Turkson, presi­dent of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said the biggest challenge in reducing poverty and environmental degradation was “within our minds and hearts”. He added that mankind would need “seriously to review the dominant model of development”. Anti-globalisation activist Naomi Klein was to join the cardinal for a climate conference in Rome. “The holistic view of  [the Pope’s] Laudato si’ encyclical should be a catalyst to bring together the twin economic and climate crises,” she told The Observer.
