Nicolson scores court victories in battle over council tax

A RETIRED vicar’s campaign against the effect the council tax has on the poorest people in society has been boosted by two court victories, writes Joanna Moorhead.

The Revd Paul Nicolson, 83, has for many years waged a battle against what he believes are unreasonable financial demands made of the poorest in society, withholding his own council tax in protest.

Now the Supreme Court has upheld his argument that Haringey Council acted unlawfully when it carried out a council tax consultation in 2012, which he said did not offer alternatives to those on low incomes. In a separate battle, the High Court has given him leave for judicial review of the £125 costs for a summons sought by Haringey Council for non-payment of council tax.
