The research by the Oasis Foundation (News from Britain and Ireland, 18 February) reflects what I found in my own, admittedly limited, research completed in 2015. My research MA was on gay and lesbian Catholics in permanent, monogamous, same-sex unions who wished to be true to their faith, their sexuality and the love they found with their partners.
I found that the greatest influence in the difficulty of self-acceptance was the Church’s teaching that homosexuality is “intrinsically disordered”. This was more influential than any scriptural reference that might be interpreted as hostile to LGB people.
