This coming Advent marks the second anniversary of the introduction of the new –  and, in my view, embarrassingly bad – English translation of the Mass. Of the many people I have spoken to about it, almost all dislike it. Must we be lumbered with this version and its solecisms, dissonances and straight mistranslations for the foreseeable future? It may be too soon for the English-speaking bishops to disassociate themselves from it altogether, but after all they did, before Rome intervened, approve the much better 1998 International Commission on English in the Liturgy translation. Couldn’t our bishops’ conference give permission for that translation to be used, perhaps in special circumstances, perhaps for a trial period? At present, those of us who love both
