Time to face facts


 
I was delighted at Mary McAleese’s description of the Church’s attitude to women as a “blindside” (News from Britain and Ireland, 21 March). In 1990 when I was president of the Law Society I made a speech bewailing the lack of female High Court judges. I was heavily criticised for it. The position has improved since to society’s benefit, even if there is a long way to go, particularly in the Supreme Court. The current attitude of the Church towards women seems to be set in stone, rather like the Ten Commandments. I have never read nor had explained to me any theological rationale behind the Church’s current position.
