Free speech - a qualified right?


 
Two weekends ago I was deeply moved to watch the millions of people on the streets of Paris (“Five days that shook the republic”, 17 January). But last week, as thousands queued to buy the new edition of Charlie Hebdo, I could not say with them “Je suis Charlie”. How can the magazine have fallen into the trap of offending our Muslim brethren for a second time? Nothing can diminish the profound sorrow we all felt at the terrible slaughter of the magazine’s cartoonists. But I feel great empathy with Muslims who have been deeply offended again. Yes, we have the right to free speech and, as some say, “the right to offend”. But do we really want a society where “just because we can”, we do (deliberately hurt others by our words and, in this
