No sectarian breeding ground


 
Francis Campbell (17 January) is right to say that it is a myth that Catholic schools in the north of Ireland were breeding grounds for sectarian violence during the Troubles.Like most Catholic children, I, along with my siblings, attended a variety of Catholic schools in Belfast during the Troubles. For the most part, the essential ingredient of the school ethos was a Catholic faith that opposed all forms of bigotry, intolerance and violence. In fact, schools provided a space that allowed astute pastors, parents and teachers to get the gospel message of peace and reconciliation into the classroom and out into very troubled streets.
