Cardinal Cormac Murphy- O’Connor’s recent comments in a BBC interview (News from Britain and Ireland, 11 October) were significant and are to be welcomed. The recognition that there is a crisis in vocations to the priesthood and that a possible way forward would be the ordination of married men is a realistic argument and should be actively considered.Earlier this year, Pope Francis met with the Brazilian Bishop Erwin Kräutler. In the course of their reported discussion, it became clear that local needs require local solutions: the Pope explained that he could not take everything in hand personally from Rome.
