The first native Chicagoan to serve as archbishop, he was a tenacious defender of orthodoxy respected for his intellectual gifts Cardinal francis George OMI, the Archbishop Emeritus of Chicago, has died from cancer. The cardinal stepped down as leader of the 2.2-million-member diocese last November, when Archbishop Blase Cupich was installed as the city’s ninth archbishop.
