I feel I have been rather nobly restrained about my strong dislike of the new translation of the Mass. “You’ll get used to it” people told me, and by and large they were right. I have got used to it, although that must beg the question about whether it is ever good to desensitise oneself to the ugly or the banal.

However, last month, Pope Francis appointed a commission to revisit Liturgiam Authenticam, the controversial 2001 document that lumbered the English-speaking world with the 2011 translation, so I feel permitted, even encouraged, to have a small whinge.

Today’s whinge is not going to be about the un-say-ability of the text. (The word “co-heirs” is very nearly unpronounceable aloud – even before you get onto the mismatch between Latin and English syntax.) Or that “cup” happens to be the correct translation of calicem and “of one being” a better translation of consubstantia than “consubstantial” is. Or that Biblical references wantonly referencing the Douay-Rheims translation are both unscholarly (since it was translated from the Vulgate rather than the original) and ahistorical (since the text was very quickly deemed unusably Latinate and so many English Catholics preferred the King James Version.) Or … or … or …
