This Easter will see several thousand people joining the Catholic Church in ceremonies all over the country. It isn’t fashionable to make a great deal out of this nowadays. Not wishing to offend the faith or denomination to which the person concerned had belonged before is one reason. Another, I suspect, is not being quite sure what to make of the phenomenon of conversion itself. Cradle-Catholics never quite seem to grasp it. And, of course, there is a largely unseen flow in the other direction, which we don’t much talk about. Even the word “converted” seems unpalatable; hence the current low-key phrase “received into full communion”. This is more appropriate for someone previously baptised – who is already, in the words of Vatican II’s Decr
