The “hippie musical” is a minor subset of sung theatre which, at the turn of the 1970s, celebrated the new social and cultural freedoms with works that unzipped (sometimes literally) traditional restrictions on what could be shown and said. Three of these pieces – Hair, Godspell and Pippin – remain largely stranded in their time, but one has powerfully endured for five decades beyond the shrivelling of flower power. Regularly revived, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, given a huge UK stadium tour only four years ago, now receives another, definitive-feeling revival (to 27 August).
